Types of Horse Racing Bets

WIN" bet is just what it sounds like: betting that the horse you pick will win the race. You win if the horse you picked wins.

For a horse to "PLACE" it must finish the race either first or second. This bet generally pays less than the win bet but it gives you two chances to win instead of just one.

For a horse to "SHOW" it must finish the race either first, second or third. This bet generally pays less than either the win or place bet, but it gives you three chances to get a return for your investment.

ACROSS THE BOARD
This is a quick way to say that I want to bet a horse to finish in any of the first three positions etc. ($2 Across The Board = $2 to win, $2 to place, and $2 to show). If the horse wins you collect all three bets. If the horse finishes 2nd then you collect the place and show bets. If the horse finishes 3rd then you will only collect the show bet. For

A Group Should Try The SHOW PARLAY
This is always fun to do when you are at the track with a group of friends. Each participant contributes to the pool of betting money (i.e. $5). You elect a captain to make the wager. Everyone participating gets to vote for their choice of the horse to show. You place the bet on the horse that gets the most votes. If the horse finishes in the top three positions you add the winnings to the pool of betting money and select another race to do the same thing.

Remember that it is not a good idea for this parlay bet or any other bet to attempt to play every race on the card. Some races are much harder to determine the winners. These races should be passed and save your money for better opportunities. As with most everything in life it is more fun to win than lose.

Win, Place, Show Parlay Strategy
Win, Place, Show Parlays are simple to play and, if you have the nerve you can make a great deal of money. Let's use an example to make this easy.

When playing a parlay you must decide what type you will play. We will use a Win Parlay in this example. You look at the program and think in the 1st race the # 3 horse will win, in the 4th race you think the # 5 horse will win, and in the 8th race you think the # 9 horse will win. You are now ready to take your chances.

Lets play a $10.00 win Parlay in the example: 1st race $10.00 win on # 3. The # 3 wins the first race and pays $8.00. so now we take the $40.00 ticket and place it all to win on the # 5 horse in the 4th race. The # 5 horse wins the 4th race and pays $6.00 to win. We now have a $120.00 ticket. We now take the $120.00 and place it all to win on the # 9 horse in the 8th race. The # 9 horse wins and pays $5.00. We have just WON $300.00!!! All of this for a $10.00 investment. You can play 2 races or 12 races the choice is yours.
Tip: Parlays are great to play when the favorites are at short prices. There is not much value in a $4.00 horse but if you can find 3 or 4 it can payoff playing parlays.
